The course is planned for people who have a first degree and/or professional
qualification and experience in education or training. Competence in written
English and in basic keyboard skills are important.

special software. We provide FirstClass. In some circumstances you may need

THE CERTIFICATE is awarded by the Institute of Education, of the University
of London, the third oldest and one of the most prestigious universities in
England. It is a professional graduate college of the federal University of
London, is one of the premier institutions conducting teaching and research
in the field of Education. Along with other colleges of the University, such
as Imperial College and the London School of Economics, it enjoys an international
This part-time Certificate has been offered annually to academics and trainers
worldwide since 1992, and has been constantly updated. The next course will
run for 20 weeks from 8th November 2002 and there will be approximately 300
The course provides opportunities to investigate in depth the nature of online
discussions so as to assess their role in the creation of virtual classrooms.
It takes a critical approach to both old and new technologies in education and
training for distance and campus students. Crucially, it offers the experience
of being an online student and thus a starting point from which to observe the
benefits and problems of course design by new media. Its direct benefit consists
in the process of taking part, particularly of sustaining participation over
a longer period as students need to do. Finally, it offers access to a community
of peers who have a wide range of expertise. It is thus suitable either for
people involved in education who have never conducted online courses, or for
more experienced people who value becoming an online learner for a period and
who seek a structured discussion forum.
For one half of the course, all participants work together in English (mainly
in groups with some plenary discussion). But in the other half, they split into
regional groups who may use different languages. The regional groups consider
issues of more local interest in their respective countries, and spend some
time inspecting web sites relevant to them.
Analyse and develop online teaching approaches
The course is taught by staff with extensive experience in the design and delivery
of online courses. Tutors are from the Institute of Education and are joined
by experts from other universities.
The focus of the course is on the educational, rather than the technical aspects
of online course delivery. It does not aim to train users in the latest technologies.
It is a professional rather than an academic course, and is largely reflective
and exploratory in nature. Participants will be guided through a range of different
activities which they discuss online with international peers and tutors from
many different disciplines.
It treats several broad themes:
The role of computer mediated discourse in education and training.
Teaching and management of learning online.
Issues of innovation within different institutional and cultural contexts.
The World Wide Web.
