DOIT. A dermatology training program.

Dermatology is an ideal medical specialty to apply multi-media based teaching concepts since visualisation of the pathologies plays a major role.

DOIT (Dermatology Online with Interactive Technology" (www.swisdom.org) ) is an interactive, multilingual (German, English, French, Spanish, Portuguese) gender-sensitive  online-program for the education of under- and postgraduate students in dermatology. It has been elaborated over the past 7 years with the support of the Swiss Virtual Campus (SVC; # 991017) and 5 Dermatological Institutions and their Universities.

The features of the program are designed to meet the requirements of students in Medicine.

Orientation

  • Cyberskin: a topographic, morphology-based guide through the list of contents

Learning

  • Cyberlecture: a virtual lecture text and atlas, including 12 audio-video clips demonstrating important diagnostic and therapeutic procedures

Training

  • Cybertrainer: an interactive case-based training program including multiple-choice questions and optional knowledge assessment by a test

Recapitulation

  • DermaPod: Short video clips with spoken text and pictures, repeating  the major content of one hour lecture in 3-5 minutes; learning and repeating while travelling

Testing

  • Save Your Skin: gender-sensitive game for knowledge assessment
  • DermaPuzzle: game for attributing correct diagnoses and differential diagnoses

 

Additional functionalities are: Cyberforum: a discussion forum with users and tutors; Cybertools: Links and search engine; an authoring tool with an integrated, online review-process and online quality-control, a personalised notepad, a XML-based PDF print function, tutor assistance and a contextual help function.

Teaching Scenario: DOIT is used in an integrated blended learning approach by students of the Swiss Universities in their 3.-6. year of medical education. It is based on the official catalogue of learning objectives. More than 30 clinics and institutions worldwide have registered. The acceptance rate is high and the program has been evaluated as good or very good by more than 90% of the users.
