The RACOON project will develop a set of online resources treating artist’s original materials and techniques to support the joint Bachelor programme in conservation proposed by the four Swiss UAS. Each of the four institutions is specialised in a specific field of conservation-restoration and will be responsible for their specific topics : the Abegg-Stiftung in Riggisberg for textiles; the Hochschule der Künste in Bern (HKB) for paintings and sculptures, paper and modern materials; the Haute école d'arts appliqués (HEAA Arc) in La Chaux-de-Fonds for archaeology, ethnology, scientific, technical and horological objects and the Scuola universitaria professionale della svizzera italiana (SUPSI) in Lugano for wall paintings, stucco and gilding. Principal materials and techniques used by artists will be introduced by reference to their intrinsic character and behaviour, chemical and physical features, manufacturing processes, different uses and nature and cause of decay. Among the aspects being surveyed will be historical literature, tools, signs left on the objects, together with alterations due to natural decay and to human factors. The project will develop eight course modules during the first two years, giving a total of 11 ECTS (of which 50% online) as well as tutoring tools.
